Numbers and operations
Major Concept: Numbers and Operations
Concept: [TEKS K.3.B] : Solve word problems using objects and drawings to find sums up to 10 and differences within 10.
Objective for concept : Students will solve word problems that are either addition or subtraction up to the number 10 with manipulatives.
Concept: [TEKS K.3.B] : Solve word problems using objects and drawings to find sums up to 10 and differences within 10.
Objective for concept : Students will solve word problems that are either addition or subtraction up to the number 10 with manipulatives.
Manipulative Activity
Materials:
A paper with a tree on it, 10 green apples, 10 red apples, a plus sign, a minus sign, 2 subtraction word problems, 1 addition word problem, an addition equation to be filled in with numbers, and a subtraction equation to be filled in with numbers. Student number 1: will choose one of 3 word problems and place it on the paper with the tree on it. Then, place a number on each of the two blank spaces. Finally the student will read the word problem out to the other student. Student number 2: will place the correct amount of green apples and red apples and either place a plus sign or minus sign on the tree. Then grab the correct equation either addition or subtraction and fill in the blanks with the correct numbers. Students: will take turns. |
Paper & Pencil Activity
Students will have six word problems to solve three involving addition and three involving subtraction. They will be adding and subtracting only up to the number ten.
Examples: Scot bought 7 peaches. He ate 4 peaches. How many does Scot have now? Nick has 9 books. Jeff has 5 books. How many books do they have altogether? Literature ConnectionAdding and Subtracting in Math Club

AssessmentAnne Bondoc
The teacher will walk around the classroom as the students are working on their activity. The teacher will asses their knowledge by asking the students to identify the plus, minus, equal sign, and numbers 1-10. The students will confirm that they know the amount of each number by matching the symbol with it's name. The students will solve the problem by constructing it with the manipulatives and equation. The teacher will have the students compare the differences between addition and subtraction.
